Find out about industrialists whose influence over the area and beyond helped place Furzedown on the map. Discover stories of intrigue, like a frogman and diver whose mysterious 1950s disappearance remains shrouded in secrecy. Or the involvement of a prominent family of builders in developing covert structures used during World War Two.

Many inspirational residents and visitors to Furzedown have coloured the area’s history including the author of the Dictionary of the English Language, standardising the system for writing a language. An official World War Two war artist whose paintings of the damage during the Blitz has helped an understanding of its impact. And a female engineer who became President of the Women’s Engineering Society at a time when women were still expected to stay at home.
