BAZALGETTE – The Visionary Engineer

Organized by Yvonne Shorten

Learn about Bazalgette, the unsung hero who transformed Victorian London into a modern, clean city.

Sir Joseph Bazalgette was one of the greatest of all London engineers and was regarded worldwide as a leading engineering consultant. He is mostly remembered for designing and building the Victorian sewage system in London in the 19th century. This monumental and vast system eradicated the deadly disease cholera from London which had been killing residents in thousands. BUT…he designed and built so much more of London’s infrastructure which still exists today. They include The Albert, Victoria and Chelsea Embankments, major thoroughfares and redesigned major bridges as well as two pumping stations, known as the cathedrals of industry.

Come and learn more about this truly revolutionary man and the very modern additions to his legacy, here on the banks of the river Thames today. Come and hear about The Great Stink and the extraordinary man who eradicated it from London forever!!
